Class of 2024 Valedictorians & Salutatorians

An overview of the Great Neck Public Schools Class of 2024 reveals 592 graduates from the district’s three high schools: 263 from John L. Miller-Great Neck North High School, 312 from William A. Shine-Great Neck South High School, and 17 from The Village School. A look at the valedictorians and salutatorians for North and South High Schools follows.


The North High School Valedictorian is Zachary Hyman. The South High School Valedictorian is Lillian Lin.

Zachary Hyman

North High Valedictorian Zachary Hyman is a National Merit Scholarship Commended Student, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and a National Spanish Exam Gold Medalist. He is the founder and president of the North High Peer Tutoring Club, president of the Chess Team, a Peer Leader, a member of the Pre-Med Club, and a member of the Math Team. A talented musician, Zachary performed vocal solos at annual NYSSMA competitions and was selected to several All-County Chorus ensembles. He was also selected as an alternate for the All-State Mixed Chorus. At North High, he shared his musical talents as a member and student director of the A Cappella Club and Opera performer, and he sang with the Community Music Project. His involvement in the performing arts earned him induction into the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

During the summers before his junior and senior years, Zachary participated in science programs at prestigious institutions. In 2022, he studied Nucleosynthesis: The Origin of Elements at the Summer Pre-College Program at Harvard University. In 2023, he conducted advanced research and worked with a mentor at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research. Zachary will attend Duke University.

Lillian LinSouth High Valedictorian Lillian Lin is a National Merit Scholarship Winner, an AP Scholar, and a National Latin Exam Gold Medalist. She served as president of DECA, vice president of Academic Outreach, and a member of the school’s Wharton Global High School Investment team.

A four-year member of the school’s DECA team, Lillian won several awards at local, regional, and national DECA business competitions. In 2022, she won first place for the North Atlantic Region in the DECA Virtual Business Challenge, as well as first place in New York and fifth place internationally for her strategic proposal for a small business post-COVID recovery plan. The following year, in 2023, she again placed first in the state and top 20 internationally for a strategic proposal to improve customer service at a local bank. During her high school career, Lillian put her business and marketing skills to use as an intern with the Great Neck Plaza Business Improvement District, Hofstra University, and a PBA campaign. Lillian will attend NYU Stern School of Business.


The North High School Salutatorian is Jonathan Sanders. The South High School Salutatorian is Kira Nguyen.

Jonathan SandersNorth High Salutatorian Jonathan “Jules” Sanders is a National Merit Scholarship Winner, an AP Scholar with Distinction, a National Latin Exam Gold Medalist, and a recipient of writing awards including the National Council of Teachers of English Achievement Award and the Williams College Writing Award for Fiction. He served as editor-in-chief of the North High school newspaper, Guide Post; secretary-general of the Model United Nations Club, winning Best Delegate and Outstanding Delegate awards at competitions at Bronx Science and Hofstra University; varsity team captain of the Academic Quiz Bowl, which won the 2023 Long Island Regional Quiz Bowl Championship; and president and founder of the Classics Club, which leads a “Latin for All” program for middle school students at the local library.

In the summer of 2022, Jules attended a Brown University Pre-College program where he studied the History of American Foreign Policy. As a junior, he participated in Project Understanding Israel, a Jewish-Catholic dialogue and interfaith trip to Israel to perform community service. In the summer of 2023, he interned with the Ali Leadership Institute and New York State Assemblywoman Sillitti’s office. Jules will attend Harvard University.

Kira NguyenSouth High Salutatorian Kira Nguyen is a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and a National Latin Exam Gold Medalist. She served as Science Olympiad president and was a four-year member of the team, which won the regional championship and advanced to the States all four years, making appearances at the national competition twice; president of the Pre-Med Club, winning several awards at Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) conferences; president of the Students Putting an End to Cancer (SPEC) club; and president of Academic Outreach. She was a two-year intern at the Feinstein Research Institute where she conducted research about metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer immunotherapies, and she presented at a world conference on lung cancer in Singapore.

Kira is also a varsity athlete, serving as captain of the six-time Nassau County Champions South High Girls Varsity Fencing Team. She was a starter and anchor all four years of her high school career, earning recognition as a Newsday Top 10 Fencer and a member of the Newsday All-Long Island Fencing Team. Kira also competes in epee fencing outside of school and is ranked regionally and nationally by the USA Fencing Top Rankings. Kira will attend Brown University.
