- Set a good example for your children. Let them see you read every day.
- Make reading together a fun activity and one that you and your child look forward to.
- Visit the library often. Take advantage of the many literacy clubs and activities it offers. Help your child choose books that are of interest to him/her.
- Read to your child every day, even if it is just for 10 minutes. Read to your child even once he/she starts to read independently.
- Talk about what you read and encourage your child to predict what might come next. Just make sure not to overanalyze a book and make reading seem more like work.
- Do not focus on correcting your child's mistakes that do not change the meaning. Comprehension is the ultimate goal. If your child is understanding what he/she is reading, he/she is on the right track!
- Talk about the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
- Encourage your child to make connections while they are reading. Talk about connections they may have to events in their own lives and/or to other books they may have read.
- Talk about similarities and differences between books, characters, and anything else from the book that may interest your child.
- Have your child read to a younger sibling or friend.
- Join a book club.
- Give your children books or magazine subscriptions as gifts.
- Provide lots of opportunities for reading.
- Most of all, have fun reading and enjoy!!!
