    Fifth Grade Curriculum Highlights

The following is a list of some of the scientific concepts that will be covered during fifth grade:

    1. Matter and Energy in Organisms and Ecosystems – students will develop an in-depth understanding of how matter and energy interact in organisms. Some of the topics to be covered will be:

Energy transfer among organic materials and life forms including:

    o   Food webs

    o   Food chains

    o   Systems

    o   Consumer pyramid

Students will engage in a Biome/ecosystem research project to research the following:

o   Organisms that survive in a specific ecosystem

    o   Adaptations

o   Environmental impact of humans on the environment

o   Introduction of new species to the environment

o   Conservation and protection of Earth’s resources

    2. Earth’s Place in the Universe

Ø Study of celestial bodies including:

o   Study of stars and distances from Earth

    o   Rotation

    o   Revolution

o   The sun and its relationship to length and direction of shadows.

o   Patterns as seen from Earth

    3. Earth Systems – students will engage in experimentation and research to gain a richer understanding of the Earth’s major systems including:

    Ø Hydrosphere

o   Interaction of water in the atmosphere and on land

o   Relationship among oceans, weather, and climate

    Ø Atmosphere

    Ø Biosphere

o   Study of land and water used by living things including humans

o   Ratio of land and water on Earth

o   Determining the difference between sources of fresh water vs. ocean water

o   Human impact on Earth’s systems

4.Matter and its Interactions – students will conduct experiments, make observations, and record data specific to developing and understanding in matter including:

Ø Matter is made up of smaller particles (molecules)

Ø Matter is conserved during physical changes of matter

    o   Solids

    o   Liquids

    o   Gases

    Ø Chemical changes

    Ø Measurement of matter

    Ø Mixtures

    Ø Solutions

Ø Objects that conduct electrical or thermal energy

Ø Gravitational Force of Earth and its pull on matter toward the center of Earth
