• Fourth Grade Curriculum Highlights

The following is a list of some of the scientific concepts that will be covered during fourth grade:

    1. Matter and Energy in Organisms and Ecosystems – students will develop an in-depth understanding of how matter and energy interact in organisms. Some of the topics to be covered will be:

Energy transfer among organic materials and life forms including:

    o   Communities

o   Dissection of a Mystery Object

    o   Adaptations

o   Acquired, Learned, and Acquired Traits

    2. Earth’s Place in the Universe

Review of the study of celestial bodies including:

o   Gravity and its effect on the solar system

    o   Rotation

    o   Revolution

    o   Phases of the moon

3.Matter and its Interactions – students will conduct experiments, make observations, and record data specific to developing and understanding in matter including:

Matter is made up of smaller particles (molecules)

Matter is conserved during physical changes of matter

    o   Solids

    o   Liquids

    o   Gases

    Measurement of matter

    Physical Changes vs. Chemical Changes

Objects that conduct electrical or thermal energy

    Water Cycle

    4. Energy-students will participate in a number of activities to identify different forms of energy including:

    Electrical Energy

    Heat Energy

    Light Energy

    Sound Energy

    Mechanical Energy

    Chemical Energy

    5. Forces-students will participate will identify the needs of forces for moving matter whether it is productive or destructive movement including:

    Speed/Velocity

    Friction

    Gravity

    Magnetism

    Weathering, Erosion, and Deposition
