  • The Math in Focus program, published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, is used for formal math instruction. This is a child friendly program containing many components that integrate literature, science and social studies into the study of math. It is a hands-on, manipulative-based, program with a strong technology component. Math is taught through whole class instruction, in small groups, or individually. There is something for everyone: English Language Learners, children who need Enrichment, or those who need some Intervention. Math in Focus is a comprehensive program based on the New York State Standards in Mathematics. The five areas addressed in kindergarten are:

    1. Counting and Cardinality
    2. Geometry
    3. Operations and Algebraic Thinking
    4. Numbers and Operations in Base 10
    5. Measurement and Data

    Kindergartners will learn to:

    • Count to 100 by ones and tens
    • Write numbers 0 – 20
    • Understand ordinal numbers (1st – 10th)
    • Compare numbers using vocabulary like more, fewer, less, same, etc.
    • Identify and describe, analyze, compare and create shapes
    • Understand addition and subtraction
    • Work with the numbers 11 – 19 to gain foundations for place value
    • Describe and compare measurable attributes
    • Classify and sort objects into categories
